What a hidden fire blanket really means

A pan fire won't wait for anyone to find it

When a pan catches, whoever is at the stove has a few seconds. The alarm is screaming, the flames are climbing, and they need something in their hands now. Not after crouching down, pulling out the bleach and feeling around in the dark for a bag they've never seen.

And it isn't always you standing there.

Almost half of all house fires start with cooking1 2. Most people know that, buy a fire blanket, put it out of sight, and feel like the kitchen is handled.

Get A Fire Blanket You Can Leave Out

The part nobody tells you

Nobody hides a fire blanket on purpose. The bag does it for you.

Almost every fire blanket comes in the same bright red bag with FIRE printed across it in capital letters. It's made to look like a warning sign, because warning signs get noticed.

But a warning sign is the last thing anyone wants on their kitchen wall. It looks like something from a school science lab or a hospital corridor. So it goes in a cupboard "just for now," and just for now turns into years.

And the moment it's out of sight, it only works for the person who put it there.

You bought the right blanket. It just came in the wrong bag.

Ditch The Red Bag

You already tried the usual fixes

You've tried every spot. It still ends up out of sight.

What you've already tried

You hung it by the stove, and it came back down. You moved it to the drawer under the cooktop, then the pantry, then the top of the fridge. You told everyone where it is, more than once. And if a pan caught tonight, you'd still be the only one who knows where to look.

What it feels like day to day

The red bag at the back of the cupboard every time you reach for a sponge. A little jump in your chest when the smoke alarm goes off over burnt toast. Knowing it's in the wrong place, and leaving it there anyway.

What's underneath it

The worry you don't say out loud: you can't be in the kitchen every time someone else is cooking.

Try The One That Stays Out

A fire blanket you'd leave out

Change the cover. Keep the blanket.

The AESKA Fire Blanket is a full fire blanket inside a hardcover coffee table book. A textured cover in beige or black, Fire Blanket written across the front in calligraphy, and two black tabs at the bottom. It looks like something you picked for your home, so it stays where you put it: on the kitchen table, the island, or a single nail on the wall. Guests pick it up to take a closer look, and now they know where it is too.

Inside, nothing has changed. It's a 1 × 1 m (39 × 39 in) fire blanket, certified to EN 1869:2019. Pull the two tabs, the blanket comes out in your hands, lay it over the pan, turn off the heat and leave it for at least 30 minutes. Let the cover do the remembering.

●  Side by side

The blanket inside does the same job. Everything around it doesn't.

Any good fire blanket can smother a small pan fire. The difference is everything that happens before the fire: where it lives, who knows it's there, and whether anyone can reach it in the few seconds that count.

Swap The Red Bag For A Book

THE DESIGN

It looks like you chose it

Beige for a light kitchen, black for a dark one. A textured cover, Fire Blanket in calligraphy, and nothing about it that looks like it came from a hardware store. It sits on the island next to the fruit bowl like it was always meant to be there. That's the whole trick: something you like looking at never gets put away.

WHERE IT LIVES

Close to the door. Not over the stove.

The instructions on the back say it plainly: keep it visible and easy to reach, near the kitchen exit, not directly above the stove. That way you grab it as you step back from the fire, not by reaching over it. A red bag in a cupboard can't do that. A book on the table by the door can.

WHO KNOWS WHERE IT IS

The test that shows who it's really for

Ask someone else in your house where your fire blanket is, and don't help them. If they hesitate, it's only really there for you. With ours, nobody has to think. They point at it, because they walk past it every day: your partner, your kids, the babysitter, your parents when they visit.

ON THE WALL

One nail. Nothing to pull loose.

There's a small hole at the top of the back, so it hangs upright on a nail or a small hook, like a picture. No bracket, no sticky strip, no plastic holder to come away from the wall. And the two tabs are already hanging down, right where your hands go.

THE LIFETIME GUARANTEE

Use it once. We'll send another.

Every fire blanket is single use, and the back of ours says so too. But ours is also part of your home, and a used one leaves an empty spot on the table. So it comes with a lifetime guarantee: if you ever have to use it on a fire, contact our support and we'll send you a new one, free.

Get The Fire Blanket Everyone Can Find

●  Two rooms, two blankets

One for the kitchen. One for the living room.

The kitchen is where pans catch. The living room is where the candles are lit, the fireplace is going, and everyone settles in for the evening.

But nobody puts a red fire blanket in the living room. Not because nothing can catch there, but because no one wants a big red bag next to the sofa.

Ours is a coffee table book, so the coffee table is exactly where it belongs. One on the kitchen island, one next to the candles, and everyone in the house knows where both of them are.

The kitchen

Pan fires and grease fires, right where you cook

The living room

Candles, a spark from the fireplace, the bin by the sofa

Same blanket, same EN 1869:2019 certification, made for both. Beige in one room and black in the other, or the same in both.

The standard, on the box

EN 1869:2019 is the European standard for fire blankets. Ours is printed on the back of every box, not just written in a product listing.

Instructions anyone can follow

"Pull the tapes, protect your hands behind the blanket, cover the fire and turn off the heat. Leave for at least 30 minutes." It's printed on the back in 12 languages. And because the book lies out, people pick it up and read it before they ever need it.

The limits, printed just as clearly

It's for small fires: a pan, a bin, a candle, burning clothing. It doesn't replace a smoke alarm or a fire extinguisher, and the back of the box says so. If in doubt, get out, close the door and call for help.

Every night it stays in the cupboard is another night only you know where it is.

Someone in your house will cook dinner tonight, and it might not be you. The pan goes on, the oil heats up, and the red bag stays exactly where it's been for years. Fixing it takes one nail, or one empty spot on the kitchen table.

Questions people with a fire blanket in a cupboard ask

Straight answers, no small print.

Does it actually work, or is it just a book?

It's a real fire blanket. Inside the cover is a full 1 × 1 m (39 × 39 in) blanket, certified to EN 1869:2019, the same job as any good fire blanket. Pull the two tabs, the blanket comes out in your hands, lay it over the fire, turn off the heat and leave it for at least 30 minutes. The book is only the outside.

I already have a red one. What do I do with it?

Keep it. Put it in the car or the garage, where a red bag doesn't bother anyone. The new one goes where people actually are: the kitchen and the living room, out where everyone can see it.

Does it replace a fire extinguisher or a smoke alarm?

No. It's for small fires, and it works best alongside a smoke alarm and a fire extinguisher. The back of the box says the same thing.

What kind of fires is it for?

Small, contained fires: a pan, a pot of oil, a bin, a candle, or burning clothing (wrap it around the person from face to feet). It's not for lithium-ion batteries or electrical equipment that's still plugged in. Never use water on burning oil. And if a fire is bigger than you can cover, get everyone out, close the door and call your local emergency number.

How do I hang it on the wall?

There's a small hole at the top of the back, so it hangs upright on a nail or a small hook, like a picture. The back of the box recommends somewhere visible and easy to reach, near the kitchen exit, not directly above the stove. Or just leave it on the kitchen table or island.

Is it single use?

Yes. Like every fire blanket, it's made to be used once, and the back of the box says so. That's why ours comes with a lifetime guarantee: if you ever use it on a fire, contact our support and we'll send you a new one, free. It's part of your home, so it shouldn't leave a gap.

Why would I want two?

Pans catch in the kitchen. Candles and the fireplace are in the living room. Nobody wants a red bag next to the sofa, so the living room usually has nothing. A book on the coffee table fixes that, and then everyone in the house knows where both of them are.

How big is it, and what's in the box?

The blanket inside is 1 × 1 m (39 × 39 in). The box is the size of a large hardcover book: 27 cm tall, 18 cm wide and 5 cm thick (10.6 × 7.1 × 2 in), so it sits on a coffee table or kitchen island like one. Instructions are printed on the back in 12 languages.

What if it doesn't look right in my home?

It comes in black and beige, so pick the one that suits your room. And you have 30 days: if it's not right for your home, we'll make it right.
